Surviving Holidays In Residency
November and December are great times. The end of the year brings so many holiday parties, days off of work and, of course, the holidays themselves.
But in residency and fellowship, the holidays can feel different. You’re often working one, if not more, holidays. You’re exhausted after so many months of being on call and are trying to find the mental energy to figure out gifts to get your kids, spouse, family, etc. You often miss out on holiday parties because you’re in the hospital. You can’t make the drive to your family in the limited amount of time you have off. And when you’re at work on a holiday, you’re given a $10 voucher to get lunch in the cafeteria…
I’m getting overwhelmed just thinking about it! If you’re new around here, we’re all about fostering wellness and a life outside of residency. So you better believe we’re here to help you navigate the holiday season.
First and foremost, this is a great time to acknowledge all that is done for you by your loved ones. Did your wife or husband put up some holiday decorations? Did you parents bring most of the food to Thanksgiving dinner? It truly takes a village to get through medical training and the end of the year is a great time to reflect on this and give appreciation to those who have helped you get to where you are.
If you’re like me and far from your family during the holidays, travel can be both expensive and logistically during this time. If you’re not able to make it home, still celebrate the holidays! Put up some lights and a small Christmas tree, and celebrate with your residency family even with the smallest of gifts.
PS. If you’re looking for great gifts to give the doctors in your life, head over to our shop. You won’t be disappointed!
Remember that the years of medical training are limited. These holidays are going to look different, and that’s okay. Know that there is an end to all of this nonsense. In the meantime, find ways to make the end of the year meaningful for you. Find one tradition that you can keep through the years. For me, this was splurging on a spa day with one of my best friends between Christmas and New Years. It was a great reset button for us, especially with both of us often working New Years Eve!
The TLDR - Holidays are a hard time as a medical trainee. Give yourself grace, and Happy Holidays.
